GDS is pleased to present ´Caddilac4´, the gallery’s first solo exhibition with Minneapolis-based artist, Shaina McCoy. The exhibition features McCoy’s newest series of portrait paintings that traces her family heritage by using thick and glossy brush strokes.
McCoy´s paintings are not considered a documentation but stand as memory traces of the original images, scrubbed of their details. While withholding the realistic aspect of these images, she presents just enough information in them, balancing between the precipice of familiarity and anonymity and blurring private and public identity. The artist´s signature faceless figures is not an erasure but rather, an affirmation. Using the form of portraiture, she ascribes importance upon them, granting them permission to take up space.
